As far as brands go, you can’t go wrong with speedo. Tyr is pretty good too.
Sizing is a little harder. You can find size charts for the different brands and go off of measurements. Here’s speedo’s sizing chart for men posted on swimoutlet: http://www.swimoutlet.com/sizing/speedo-men.asp
I would say just pick a suit you like, and go to that brand’s website to find the exact sizing chart for that particular suit. References :
Write to japanswimshop.com and they are likely to be able to advise you. They have something in between jammers and shorts not shown in their website but you can ask for it. My friends used them before. All the best! References :
wearing proper swim gear wont make you look like a poser unless your going all out the best gear money can buy. jammers are fine. i wear jammers or briefs. i actually find the briefs to be the most comfortable for swimming, though i was very uncomfortable wearing them at first. sizing can be really tough as they don’t seem to follow standards of any sort. for brands i’d recommend tyr or nike. i had lower end speedo suits for training and the chlorine damages them quickly. my nike and tyr suits made it drastically longer.
swimoutlet has good prices, but sizing could be an issue. if you can find something locally you will be better off. i wear a size 33w and have swim gear up to a 36w. if you were to choose briefs over jammers, go with a higher cut side. 2" or less or they look and feel stupid. References :

jammers are good. i think it looks more silly to see guys swimming laps with trunks on
Swimoutlet.com probably has the best prices out there, plus a huge selection, and free shipping I think. http://www.swimoutlet.com/SearchResults.asp?Cat=213&gclid=CKbJs4iTtZcCFQKHxwoday8Mjw

good answer above from Clair Bear. Go to the swim outlet site, the prices are very good, go with Speedo, Tyr or Nike.
Good luck. You won’t look like a poser, enjoy your swimming.
